The application of microprocessors is increasing day
by day. There are numerous applications of microprocessors. They are
used in industry, instrumentation, transportation, military equipments
like Tank, Radar etc.; banks, business organizations, communication,
automatic testing of products, lift control, speed control of motors,
automatic control of generator’s voltage, consumer and commercial
applications etc. now smaller institutions, business organizations,
small industries etc. can afford to have a microcomputers for general
purpose computation or dedicated application. Microcomputers are also
used to store and display information.
The original objective for the inventions of a
digital computer was to create a fast computing machine. But today a
large percentage of the applications of digital computers are of
non-mathematical or non numerical nature. They are used for storing,
displaying and transmitting information. As a computer is a very fast
machine, information are transmitted at very high rate. This feature
attracts people to use digital computers for bulk storage and easy
display of information.
A few examples of computer applications have been given below
WORD PROCESSING: Now day’s Computers are widely used
in offices for preparations of texts, their storage and retrieval when
required. Such work is known as word processing. Word processing of
words allows us to create, view, edit, store, retrieve and print text. A
word processing software which performs the task of word processing. A
word processing system is highly automated electronic typing machine. As
the text is entered with the keyboard, it is displayed on the CRT
screen. The user is able to views what he was typed. He can make
corrections, add works of sentences and delete works or sentences. He
can specify left and right margins, spacing, number of lines per page
etc.
RESERVATION FOR AIRLINES AND RAILWAYS: For
reservations microcomputers have been introduced. These microcomputers
are connected to supercomputer via satellite. The officer incharge can
get information from other cities of world regarding the availability of
seats in a plane for particular date. They also get information’s about
hotels, climates etc.
INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS: The
microprocessor based systems have numerous applications in industries.
Take the example of power plant control. A microprocessors based system
indicates the voltage, power, power factor, current frequency etc. of
each generator on CRT.
GENERAL APPLICATIONS: a microprocessor based system
can also used to control the efficient burning fuel in a car. It can be
used for traffic light control, lift control, robotics etc. Robots have
mechanical hands and legs and optical sensors to the obstacles. They are
controlled by microcomputers. They perform tasks according to the
program fed to them.
DATA ANALYSIS: Computers are extensively used for
data analysis. Special program known as spreadsheet program is available
for such work. When data are entered in rows and columns on a sheet of
paper it is called as spreadsheet. The spreadsheet prepared in computer
is called as electronic spreadsheet. Spreadsheet programs are used in
accounting work, sales analysis, inventory control, tabulation of marks,
and number of business and non business data analysis works.
COMPUTER GRAPHICS: Computers are powerful tool to
prepare drawings, pictures, graphs and charts. Graphics software
packages are available for such work. Complex engineering drawing in
multicolour are now easily designed and produced with the help of
computers. A computer can produce three dimensional drawing and
pictures. Pictures can be rotated, reduced or enlarged.
DATABASE MANAGEMENT: A database is collection of
related files. A file is the collection of record. Database management
programs are available to create and handle database. Take an example of
database to keep the personal files of employees of an organization.
The stored information include name, identification number, age,
qualification, experience, specialization, the section in which the
employee is posted etc. from this database if the identification number
of an employee is given, all information about that employee is
immediately available.
BANK: computers are extensively used by bank for
general purpose computations, to entertain customers at the bank
counters, to allow customers to make transaction from remote terminals
and to process cheques and drafts which are received in large volume in
bank everyday. At bank counter a customers can make withdrawals and
deposits himself using computer. With the introduction of computer
electronic transfer of funds from one account to another has become
possible. A customer from bank counter, home, office or hotel can make
transaction using computer.
OTHER APPLICATIONS: nowadays computers are being used
in stores, shops, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, video games,
and so on and so forth. They are used in smart camera, in smart
taximeter, photograph processing laboratory, to transmit messages from
one place to another, video conferencing, computer information system,
online investment brokerage system, communication including satellite
communication, education, research, library, artificial intelligence,
smart crane, smart watch, smart phone and so on.
